Emblematic Places

In Sant Carles de la Ràpita there are many interesting places to discover, such as:
Museum of the Ebro Sea
Here you can see finds from the sea, such as anchors, handles, net-mending implements, etc.
The museum is housed in the Les Casotes building, which was built in the second half of the 19th century for the Royal Company of Canals and Irrigation of the Ebro and has remained unchanged to this day.
It is in an area with a more extensive complex that includes other outstanding heritage assets: the shipping canal, the dock and jetty, locks, guard houses, etc.
The symbolism and situation of the building make it very suitable to contain the thematic proposal, allowing a balance to be maintained between its historical nature and its potential adaptation to new uses.

Fish Exchange
This is a modern building in the heart of the fishing port, where you can see the arrival of the boats with their catches prepared for the auction.
Today the auction is mechanised, but it was not so long ago that you could hear the prices being sung out, only interrupted by the shouts of the buyers. Visitors can watch the fish being sold from a passage way on the first floor that surrounds the conveyor belt and from where you can see the stands with the buyers.
The fishing boats normally begin to arrive back in port at around 3 pm fromMondaytoFriday. The besttime to see the fish exchange in actionis at around 4.30 pm.
Please note that there are two months of the year (normallyJune and July) when the biological close season means there is no fishing.
Seafront Promenade
The promenade begins at an extensive green zone known as Garbí Park near the marina. It skirts all the beaches, crossing a bridgeand going around the old lighthouse. It is exclusively for the use of pedestrians, cyclists, runners, etc.
The Plaça del Mercat
The “market square” was once one of the nerve centres of the town. It was here that the castle stood. “Half fortress, half hermitage”, the castle was built by the Saracens and was also a place of worship. It continued to receive Muslin pilgrims long after the territory had been re-occupied by the Christians. It later became the convent of the nuns of Saint Johnunder the advocation of Santa Mariade La Ràpita. This is also the site of the watchtower known as the Torre de La Ràpita and the battery that protected the town and the entrance to the Ship Canal; the hospital that gave so much servicein times of war and troop movements; the Casa de Sanitat, etc.
The construction of the market, which was opened in 1971, led to the demolition of what remained of the old hospital, the transfer of the rim of the FigueretesWell and the disappearance of a stretch of the defensive wall on the eastern side, the part that reinforced the vaultoverlooking the fosse into which, little by little, the stones of the wall fell.
La Guardiola Look out Point
The old watch tower on the top of the 116-metre-high hill known as “La Torreta” protected the town to the west. It has an excellent panoramic view of the Ebro Delta Natural Park. We recommend visiting it before you begin your tour of the Delta, as it is the nearest panoramic viewpoint. From there you can see the river,L’Encanyissadalagoons,LaTancada,El Trabucador Beach,Punta de la Banya NatureReserve,La Trinitat salt pans, and Els Alfacsnaturalbay with its mollusc farms, etc.On clear days you can see all along the coast as far PenyíscolaCastle to the south and Cape Salou to the north.
La Ràpita Lighthouse
The lighthouse is some 800m to the south of the town. It is a single-storey, 13 x 13-metre square-shaped buildingin the middle of which there is a cylindrical tower that holds the lantern. The lighthouse began to operate with the current optical system in 1975.
Les Casotes and the Ship Canal Dock
Here you will find the facilities and warehouses linked to the ship canalbuilt between Amposta and Sant Carles de la Ràpitato avoid the sandbanksat the mouth of the Ebro. Alongside the canal you can see the remains of the lock and the largedock that was alsothere. This buildinghas been fully refurbished and now houses the Museum of the Ebro Sea.
